Ronald J. Washeleski

Ronald J. Washeleski, 59, of Simpson died Sunday morning at home.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Edmund C. & Rita M. JezercakWasheleski.  He attended Fell High School, Simpson. He received training as a heavy
equipment operator in the Army and served during the Viet Nam Era before his disability.

He had been a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson and enjoyed operatinghis C.B. radio.  He was a member of Hallstead Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 357.

He is survived by a brother: Edmund J. Washeleski, Simpson; a sister Amelia and her husband Richard Daniels, Simpson; three nephews: Gary & Richard Daniels Jr; John Washeleski and a niece Darlene Daniels.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St., Simpson with Mass at 9:30 AM in St. Michael’s Church, 46 Midland St Simpson, to be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph Sitko, Pastor. Interment with military services by V.F.W. Post 4712, Simpson in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday 5 to 8 Pm.

 

Louis  J.  Scombordi
March 31, 2008

Louis J. Scombordi, 66, of Carbondale died Monday at home. His wife is the former, Peggy Slugg. His first wife, the former Jeannie Nolan died in 1997.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Patsy & Genevieve Tiscia Scombordi. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School and had been employed by the U.S. Postal service for 37 years. He was the Superintendent of Postal Operations in Carbondale and later the postmaster in Archbald.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Carbondale where he was a former Senior Warden. He attended Deaconate training in the Episcopal Church for the Diocese of Bethlehem.  He was also a Youth Minister and Camp Director for the Bethlehem Diocese.  He was the founder of the Carbondale Food Pantry located at the Trinity Church and was the cook for many area church benefits. He was also a former member of the Carbondale Kiwanis Club. He was an early member of the Citizens for a Better Carbondale.

He enjoyed cooking for groups and his family and was a Santa helper in the area. He was a great Dad and fun loving grandfather.

Also surviving are Katie Lee Scombordi, at home; Doctors Brandy and her husband Rajeev Raghu; Amy Lee Sterling; a step daughter: Shannon and her husband Ryan Flynn; Louis and his wife Patty Scombordi; Michael and his wife Bette Scombordi; Stepson Sean and his wife Kim Hogan, Stepsons: Jim and Ryan Hogan; a brother John and his wife Sherry Scombordi; and daughters Lynn and Diane; ten grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Liturgy will be Friday with services at 10 AM in the Trinity Episcopal Church, River St. Carbondale by the Rev. Don Schaible, Rector.
Those attending service are asked to proceed directly to church.

Thomas W. “Billy” Bowell, Sr.
March 11, 2008

Thomas W. “ Billy” Bowell, Sr; 74 of Wimberley, Texas and formerly of Carbondale
died March 11th in San Marcos, Texas. His wife is the former Linda Dimas.

Born on  November 4, 1933 and raised in Carbondale, he was the son of the late
Stanley G. & Veronica Fluellen Bowell. He was a 1951 graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale.  He was an Army veteran serving in Germany from 1953-1955.

He also resided through the years in Liberty, NY and several communities in New Jersey
before moving to Texas.

He was a former member of St. Rose of Lima Church and the Knights of Columbus,
Both of Carbondale.

He is also survived by two sons: Thomas W. Bowell, Jr , who returned from Bagdad, Iraq to be with his dad minutes before he expired, and his wife Ruth, Hurst, TX; Edward “Lenny” and his wife Adriana, Driftwood, TX; a daughter: Angelina and her husband Michael Morris, Carthage, MO.; two brothers: Stanley, Cedar Grove, NJ and Robert and his wife Joann, Saw Creek, PA; two sisters: Helen and her husband Kenneth Swan, Elk Lake, Waymart, PA; Mary and her husband Peter Getzie, Carbondale; ten grandchildren: Kayla Bowell, Lockhart, Tx; Rafe and his wife Patti and Trea Bowell, Wimberly, TX; Gabrielle and Allison Bowell, Driftwood, TX; Christina and husband Bryan Dieffebnach,
Naples, Italy; Patty, Angela, Michael Jr and Kathy Morris, Carthage, MO; a great grandson Connor Dieffenbach, Naples, Italy;
and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Lyda Ehler.

Funeral services were held in Texas. Local arrangements by the Oliver R Shifler Funeral Home, Inc 62 North Main St., Carbondale.

 

 

Norma E. Parry
March 24, 2008

Norma E. Parry, 68, a resident of the Carbondale Nursing Home died Monday
evening at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Norman W. and Doris Elizabeth Phillips Parry. She graduated Benjamin Franklin high School and had been employed by the Carbondale garment industry. She later had been employed by Mack Printing Co., E. Stroudsburg for 20 years.

She was a beloved aunt who will be missed.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews including Pamela Grecco, her caregiver and Charles Stair, a brother in law.

She was preceded in death by six brothers: Glenn, Edmund, Ronald, William, David and James and three sisters: Gwenith A. Parry, Doris E. Stair and Bonnie Griffin.

The funeral will be Friday at 10 AM in the Oliver R. Shifler Funeral Home, Inc  62 N. Main St, Carbondale. Interment in Valley View Memorial Park, Montdale. Friends may call Thursday 6 to 9 PM.

Rita  V. Macheska
March 20, 2008

Rita V. Macheska, 83, of Simpson died Thursday morning at Community Hospice Care, Dumore. She was the wife of Peter Macheska, the couple had been married for 57 years.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Barney & Helen Hodorovich Washeleski.  She was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and the Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing. She had been employed as a registered nurse for forty years
retiring from Hoffmann-LaRoche Pharmaceuticals, Nutley, New Jersey.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson; the Confraternity of Christian Women and Guild; Golden Age Senior Citizens and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4712, Simpson.

Also surviving is a son Peter Joseph Macheska and his wife Susan, Pine Brook, NJ;
two grandchildren: Lindsay & Ryan; A sister: Victoria and her husband Anthony Martell, Madison, NJ; a niece Debbie Martell.

Yolanda V. Kulikowski
 March 19, 2008

 

Yolanda V. Kulikowski, 76, of Carbondale died Wednesday at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. Her husband is Joseph S. Kulikowski. The couple had celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary in August.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late John & Serafina Tricoce Santanna.
She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and a homemaker. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Community of Forest City.

Yolanda loved to spend time with her family and was noted for her telephone conversations.

Additionally surviving is a daughter Anita and her husband Gary McDonough, Carbondale; two grandchildren: Gary Jr and Angelica, a great granddaughter: Cameron”Cupcake”; who was her pride and joy, nieces and nephews.

A Blessing Service with be Saturday at 10:30   AM in St. Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St., Simpson. Interment in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Forest City. A private family visitation will be held prior to the service.

 

 

Eleanor  T.  Lee
March 10, 2008

 

Eleanor T. Lee, 84, formerly of Ben Franklin Apartments, Carbondale
and Greenfield Township died Monday at the Forest City Nursing center.
She was the widow of Reupert Lee, who died in 2000.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late George & Ella Sinclair Linskens.

She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale; Ladies Auxiliary of the Greenfield Township Fire Department; a former member of the Altar & Rosary Society of St. Pius X Church, Royal.  Eleanor was an active community volunteer.

She is survived by a daughter: Barbara and her husband Matthew Pintar, Succasunna, NJ;
A sister: Pauline Swanick, Portsmouth, VA; four grandsons: Matthew, Kevin, Jonathon and Jason and three great grandchildren: Matthew, Andrea and Michael, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son: Gerald, five brothers George, Robert, Joseph, James, Albert and four sisters: Vera Coleman, Gertrude Bertrand, Mildred Stabile, Rose Osborne.

Sandra  M. Dovin
March 7, 2008

Sandra M. Dovin, 43, of Forest City died Friday at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Her husband is Robert Dovin, the couple had been married for 26 years.

Born in Peckville, she was the daughter of John & Ann Ksiazek Syryla, Olyphant.
She was a graduate of Mid Valley High School and had been employed as a courier for Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.

Sandra enjoyed vacations with her family and cruising.

She is additionally survived by a daughter: Lisa Dovin, Carbondale; three brothers:
John, Magnolia, Del; Stanley, Scranton; Joseph, Danbury, Ct; two sisters: Lora Syryla,
North Charleston, SC; Joann Syryla-Guida, Jessup; a granddaughter: Emily, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a sister: Nancy Syryla.

A private funeral service will be conducted Monday in the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St., Simpson with services by Monsignor John T. Sekellick, Pastor
Of St. John the Baptist Brzantine Catholic Church, Forest City.  Interment in St. John’s Cemetery, Richmondale.

Michael  Senica
March 1, 2008

 

Michael Senica, 89, formerly of Simpson died Saturday at the Gino Merli
Northeast Veterans Center, Scranton.  His wife, the former Estelle Ziemba
died in 1996.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late John & Anna Honchak Senica.
He attended Fell High School and was an Army Veteran of WW II, serving as a Staff Sergeant with the Air Corps.

He was later employed by Northwest Airlines, Trans-Caribbean Airlines, and Curtis-Wright of Woodbridge, NJ.  He retired from Farview State Hospital, Waymart.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, Simpson and the Tri-County
Sportsmen Association.

He is survived by three sisters: Ester Telep, Mayfield; Dorothy Genoni, Carlstat, NJ
and Anna Senica, Simpson, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters: Julia Oleson, Helen Gerstlauer and Mary Garbrino.

The funeral will be Tuesday with a Requiem Service at 9:30 AM in St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, 33 Midland St, Simpson by the Very Rev. Archpriest David Hritcko.
Those attending services are to meet at church.
Interment in Pleasant View Cemetery, Pleasant Mount.

Steven J. Zimowski
February 16, 2008

Steven J. Zimowski, 45, of Union Dale died Saturday at the Robert Packard Hospital, Sayre.

Born in Jamaica, Queens,NY; he was the son of the late Frank J. & Dolores Nilsson Zimowski. He owned and operated Steve’s Slate Roofing, Union Dale and had been
a slate roofer for over 27 years.
 
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by two daughters: Nicole and her husband Donald Snedeker, Union Dale;
Naoma J. Howard, Meridian, MIS; a brother Frank Zimowski and his wife Patricia, Union Dale; a sister Dorothy and her husband Robert Haza, Scranton; a paternal grandmother: Hedwig Zimowski, South Gibson; three grandchildren: Araceli Ward, Meridian, MIS; Deanna and Marissa Snedeker, Union Dale, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Melissa.

A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, February 20th at 2:00 Pm

Helen Pleska Dorval, 85, of Simpson died Saturday night at Mercy hospital, Scranton.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Michael & Mary Ostrowsky Pleska.
She was a 1939 graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and was employed for over twenty years as a bookkeeper for Kitson Chevrolet, Long Branch, NJ.

She was a member of St. Basil’s Orthodox Church in America, Lord Ave., Simpson.

She is survived by a daughter: Leonette Mary and her husband Boyce Williams, Los Angeles, CA;  two brothers: Joseph Pleska, Richmondale and Nicholas Pleska, Hills, Iowa; a sister: Martha Lanzante, Wood Ridge, NJ; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers: John, Basil, Paul, Samuel and Michael and
three sisters: Mary Ruzila, Ann Lane and Evelyn Mullen.

The funeral will be Friday at 11:00 AM in St. Basil’s Orthodox Church with a Requiem Service  by the Rev. Michael Demko, Pastor. Interment in St. Tikhon’s Cemetery, South

Jacqueline H. Warrington
January 28, 2008

Jacqueline H. Warrington, 69, of Scranton died Monday at the Mountain Rest Nursing Home.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late John N. & Ethel Gavitt Kiefer Jr. She was a 1956 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and graduated first in her class of Eastern Airline Flight Attendant School, Miami Springs, Fl.

She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church, Carbondale; where she had attended Sunday School and was a former Choir member. She had been an avid ballroom dancer.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by two sons: Clayton L. and his wife Linda Warrington, Royersford; John N. Warrington, Fairfax, Va; a sister: Sandra and her husband William Lee, Greenfield Twp., a granddaughter Alexandra and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday at 12 noon in the Berean Baptist Church, 33 Lincoln Ave Carbondale with services by the Rev. Donald Hasselman. Interment in Valley View Cemetery, Montdale.

January 24, 2008

Mary A. Gallick, 78, of Simpson died Thursday evening at home.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Stephen & Mary K. Gitch Gallick.
She attended Fell High School, Simpson. She was employed by the Simpson Garment Co. and later retired from Gentex Corp., as a production inspector.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Parish, Simpson and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and Guild.

Mary enjoyed crocheting, gardening, long walks and looked forward to attending flea markets and craft shows.

She is survived by a brother Stephen W. Gallick and his wife Helen A. of Simpson who were her caregivers. An uncle Joseph Gitch and his wife Josephine, Effort and cousins.

Martha J. Hill
January 20, 2008

Martha J. Hill,93 of East Patchogue, NY died Sunday.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late William & Ruth Thomas Hill.
She was an Army veteran of WWII, where she served as a First Lieutenant. She was a registered nurse for 30 years at Brookhaven National Lab, Upton,NY.

She is survived by a sister: Helen Heissenbuttel, a nephew Henry and his wife Katherine
Heissenbuttel and a grand niece Kate; all of E. Patchogue and additional nieces and nephews of Carbondale.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Oliver R Shifler Funeral Home, Inc.

Mary “ Laskowsky” Chervanka
January 17, 2008

 

Mary “Laskowsky” Chervanka, 85, a lifelong resident of Carbondale died
Thursday night under the care of Southern Comfort Hospice at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.  She was the widow of Frank Laskowsky, who died in 1964 and Joseph Chervanka.

She was the daughter of the late Walter & Margaret Brady Szymaszek. She was a graduate of St. Rose School in 1940.  Before retiring, she was employed by the Mayfield Dress Co. for over 30 years.  She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale and International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She volunteered for many years for the Carbondale Senior Citizens. She became of lifetime member of the Johnson City, NY
Ladies Auxiliary VFW #2332, I 1989; a member of the South Side Clippers Association before it disbanded and was treasurer of the Carbondale DAV Ladies Auxiliary for many years.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. P. McAndrew, Dr. M. Hanley,
Dr. M. Hyzinski, Southern Care Hospice, the Staff of Marian Community Hospital and the Revolutionary Care Nurses for their care and compassion.

She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. All her children’s friends would call her “MA”. She wore her heart on her sleeve and cared deeply for others and was always there to lend a hand when needed. She enjoyed her monthly trips to Atlantic City and Mohegan Sun. She was a great bingo fan.

She is survived by four daughters: Patricia Bujake, Carbondale; Joan and husband John Gorel, Forest City; Alicia and husband Silvio Carlo, Carbondale; Shawne and husband
Bruce Barresse, Uniondale; eight grandchildren John Paul Gorel and fiance’ Katrina Mrakovich, Jamie Lee Gorel and fiance’ Adam White, Jennifer Gorle and William Hebner, Damien Carlo and Theresa Grecco, D’Nean and Laura Carlo, Cody and Monique Barrese.  Five great-grandchildren Julia and John Thomas Gorel, Liam John Hebner,
Taylor White, Gianna Rose Carlo. A brother Joseph Szymaszek and his wife Stasia, Carbondale, nieces, nephews and cousins especially her cousin Stella Brady who was also her best friend, travel companion and helper.

She was preceded in death by twin granddaughters: Trisha and Tara Laskowsky.

The funeral will be Monday from the Oliver R Shifler Funeral Home, Inc 62 North Main St., Carbondale with Mass at 9:30 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church to be celebrated by the
Rev. William Campbell.  Interment in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

Raymond P. Kielar
January 15, 2008

 

Raymond P. Kielar, 71, of Simpson died Tuesday at Marian Community Hospital,
Carbondale.

Born on June 25, 1936 in Simpson he was the son of the late Peter M. & Leona Pepson Kielar.  He attended Fell High School and was an altar boy at St. Michael’s Church.
As the years followed he helped his father establish their automotive and body shop , Kielar’s Garage. Then he joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War.

After, returning from+ duty, he returned home, to further help his father and raise his own family. During the next twenty years he started several business ventures, attended Penn State and served on the Vocational – Technical Crafts Committee.

He was a man of many talents. There was nothing he could not build, fix or create and  did whatever was needed. A man who believed in helping others, whatever it took. He was a true humanitarian. After the passing of his father he continued with the business his father establish in 1931. He operated the business for fifty years.

He enjoyed various interests including dancing, music, singing, waterskiing, snowmobiling and computers.  Later in life he enjoyed fishing, a family favorite.

He touched many lives and was a loyal son and a good father. We as his loving family ,will always be proud to call him father, brother, grandfather and friend. He will be sorely missed, but will never be forgotten. 

He is survived by four daughters: Phyllis and Charles Gongliewski, Simpson; Carolyn and Matthew Durkin, Jermyn; Deborah and James Graham, Jermyn; Deniece Gruse,
Alexandria, Va; two sons: Jason and his wife Marie, Denver, Co; Joseph and Teri,
Lillian, AL; a brother: Jerome and his wife Muriel, Prompton; six grandchildren:
Sarah, Samatha, Jeffrey, Alexis, Joseph, Jolyn, a niece and nephew Jennifer and Jeffrey.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Evelyn.

Joseph C. Scotchlas, 74, of Stroudsburg died Sunday.
His wife of 51 years is the former Leona A Perkowski.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Joseph & Sophie Strumski
Scotchlas. He was a 1950 graduate of Fell High School and was an Air Force Veteran.
He retired from Bell Telephone Co.

He is also survived by seven children: Joseph, Thomas, Andrew and Susan Gallagher
all of Stroudsburg; Joanne and Eugene of Nazareth and Michael, Effort; a brother Frank,
Camp Hill; four sisters: Louise Yavoroski, Carbondale; Marion Gadai, Huston, Tx;
Barbara Galvin, Douglaston, Ny; Charlotte Kluck, Simpson; twelve grandchildren,

John J. Dembrosky, Sr  91, formerly of Simpson died Sunday at the Forest City Nursing Center. His wife the former, Kathryn D. Klimek, died in 2002.

Born in Dickson City, he was the son of the late John & Julia Dembrosky. He was a coal miner and later was employed by the Gentex Corp., of Simpson. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson.

He is survived by a son : John J Dembrosky II, Carbondale; two daughters: Catherine A Butler, Las Vegas, NV; Dorothy R. Smith, Simpson; 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren.

Private burial will take place at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Simpson.
