George C. Keen died peacefully Monday morning, January 22nd. The son of G. Carlton and Myrtle Keen, he was born in Glenburn, PA on a hot July’s day in 1927. George was a 1945 graduate of Benton High School and proudly served as a business owner carrying milk, as a mail carrier out of the Dalton and Jermyn Post Offices, and as a truck driver with Agway Petroleum until his retirement in 1989. George also belonged to the American Legion #465 in Jermyn, PA and was an active member of the Finch Hill Baptist Church.

To anyone who knew him, George’s true name since boyhood was Pete. Pete met the love of his life, the former Lois Cure, when he was just 21 years old and fresh from serving in the United States Air Force. He and Lois built a home, a family and a life together in Tompkinsville, PA. The product of their love was 5 sons, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and soon-to-be 2 great-great grandchildren. You can imagine that their life held many adventures and even better stories as the result. Their love did not end but rather was paused when Lois was called home to be with the Lord in September 1990.

As is the case when a marriage has been so beautiful and offered so many blessings, Pete sought to remarry and found companionship and room to love again with Thelma Pierce Gardner. Their union served to also renew Pete’s title as “grandpa” when he gained 2 stepsons and 4 additional grandchildren, all of whom have loved him fiercely and been so fortunate to call him their own.

It is no surprise that at 90 years of age, no one in Pete’s life knows what it is to live without him. He was the patriarch of his family, preceding us all. He taught his boys what it meant to be a man, his grandchildren to value the feel of dirt in their hands and everyone he met, the impact of his personal relationship with his Savior.

Pete is survived by his wife, Thelma Keen; sons George III, Russell, James, John and Brian Keen and stepson Bruce Gardner; daughters-in-law Jean, Cheryl, Diane, Florence and Rebecca Keen, Rose and Christine Gardner; sister-in-law Trudy Keen; and his many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Pete was preceded in death his parents, wife Lois Keen, stepson Gary Gardner and brother Robert “Jiggy” Keen. It was a glorious day in Heaven when Pete came home, stood in the presence of his Creator and found his family waiting for him.

Pete’s family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Forest City Nursing Center for the compassionate and diligent care they gave him in the final weeks of his life. A memorial service will take place at the Finch Hill Baptist Church, 404 Route 106 Greenfield Township, on Saturday, January 27th at 1:00 PM. Services will be conducted by Pastor Joseph LaCava, and friends may call on the family from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Finch Hill Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by the Oliver Shifler & Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 62. North Main St. Carbondale. For condolences visit: www.shiflerfuneralhome.com
