Maria Proch, 56, of Scott Township died Monday at Geisinger –CMC, Scranton.

Born in Carbondale, she is the daughter of Marie Kutch Proch, with who she resided and the late Walter Proch. She was a graduate of Lakeland High School, received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education from Misericordia University, and her Master’s Degree from Wilkes College.

Maria was currently employed as an educator in the 6 th grade of Lakeland School District / Mayfield Elementary Center. She was a very active member in St. Basil’s Orthodox Church of America, Simpson. She served as Treasurer of the Parish Council and member of the choir. Maria was president of the parish council for thirteen years. During her tenure as president the current church building was constructed.  She was a member of the Department of Religious Education for the National Orthodox Church of America. A member of the Board of Trustees of the Century Association of St. Tikhon’s Seminary  and was awarded The Gramata, by His Beatitude Metropolitan Herman, of the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania O.C.A.  Maria was also a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House of Scranton.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two brothers, Walter Proch and wife Maryanne, Kennett Square, John Proch, Simpson, a sister, Daria and husband Dr. David Roat, Swedesboro, NJ, three nieces and a nephew, Christina Maria and Elizabeth Anne Proch and Alexandra and Benjamin Roat, and cousins.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10:00 AM with a Requiem Service in St. Basil’s Orthodox Church of America, 9 Lord Ave., Simpson by the Rev. Jason Franchak. Interment will be in St John’s Cemetery, Dundaff..   Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 Pm at the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc. 621 Main St., Simpson and Saturday from 9 AM until 10 Am at the church. Parastas will be at 7:00 PM.
