Robert F. Vandenberg, 96, of Carbondale died Tuesday at home.

Robert was born in Albany, NY, son of the late Charles B. & Mina Frank Vandenberg. He was a lifelong resident of Carbondale, graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1938 and Wyoming Seminary in 1939. He attended Lafayette College and graduated in 1943.

Robert joined the Navy in 1943 and attended Officers Training at Notre Dame University and further Naval Officer Training at Harvard University. He then spent 3 ½ years during WW II as a Lieutenant (jg) aboard the USS Tangier in the South Pacific.

Bob was employed by Hendrick Manufacturing Co., Carbondale in the sales department and was later the sales manager for the mining products division. He retired in 1983 after 36 years.

He was very civic minded and served on several boards including Past President of the National Crushed Stone Association, Past President of the Carbondale YMCA Board of Directors, Past President of the Carbondale Public Library serving for 6 years, Advisory Board of Tri- County Mental Health Board and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale.

After retirement, Robert served as President of the “Misfit Golf League” for 19 years and was also a proud member of the St. David’s Welsh Male Chorus of Scranton.

Robert had expressed his wishes to thank Dr. Neal Davis and staff, Traditional Home Health Care & Hospice and the ladies that provided him in home health care for the past few years.

He is survived by cousins and his caregivers, Alice and David Emmett and family.

He was preceded in death by a brother, H. Bruce Vandenberg.

The funeral will be Friday in the Oliver Shifler & Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 62 N. Main St., Carbondale with Services at 11:00 AM by the Rev. Donald Perry, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church. Interment will be with military honors in Sand Bank Cemetery, Greenfield Township.  Friends may call  Friday from 9 AM to 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Memorial Fund, 20 N Church St., Carbondale, PA 18407 or the Carbondale Public Library, 6 N. Main St., Carbondale.
