Shirley A. Rumford, 80, of Carbondale died Wednesday night at Geisinger-CMC, Scranton. She was the wife of Robert F. Rumford.  They had celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in April 2016.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Horatio S. and Catherine Miller Pierce. She was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. Shirley had been employed by the Big Chief Market, Carbondale and later as an assistant district manager of distribution for the Times-Tribune.

Shirley was very civic minded and was a member of the Carbondale Area P.T.A., a founding member of the Carbondale Area Band Parents Association,   Board member of the Carbondale Y.M.C.A., where she chaired the yearly mum sale and was an active volunteer at the flea market at the Trinity Episcopal Church. Shirley organized many craft shows to benefit the school and YMCA.

She is also survived by her six children, Robert B., Brackney; Ronald F. and partner Steven Ford, Philadelphia; Thomas, Carbondale, Amy and husband Leonard Gerek, Carbondale; Donald and wife Gayle, Carbondale; Daniel , Reston, VA; eleven  grandchildren, Rob  Barrese, Randi Bannon, Lily, Reva, Abagayle, Bailey, Chloee, Dean and Dale Rumford; Owen and Emily Gerek, four  great grandchildren, Colin, Killian, Kaci and Sophia; four sisters, Kayrene Daniels, Carole Narcavage, Linda Mark and Marlene Mihal, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister Betty Lou.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 AM in the Oliver Shifler & Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 62 N. Main St., Carbondale.  Interment will be in Valley View Memorial Park, Scott Township.  Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carbondale Y.M.C.A. , 88 North Main Street, Carbondale, PA 18407
