Bernadine R. Gorel, 100, of Whites Crossing, Carbondale Township died on Sunday at Geisinger- CMC, Scranton. Her husband, Michael A. Gorel, died in 2007.

Born in Whites Crossing, she was the last surviving of twelve children of the late Andrew and Rose Goryl Lapka. She attended Robert Morris School, Whites Crossing and had been employed as a housekeeper at the Concord Hotel, Monticello, NY. She was later employed as a machine operator in the Carbondale Area dress manufacturing shops.

In 1977, Bernadine was awarded a Medal for Children’s Poems she wrote by President Jimmy Carter. A devote catholic, she was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson and now a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Carbondale.

Bernadine enjoyed playing 500 Rummy, word search books and bingo. The family would like to thank the physicians and nurses of Geisinger- CMC, for their care of her.

She is survived by a son, Edward Gorel, Carbondale, two daughters, Theresa Comunale and husband Ronald, Scott Township, Rose Eskandari, Annandale, VA., four grandchildren, Linda Jacobino, Renee Field, Reza and Ryan Eskandari, 8 great grandchildren, Paige and Tony Jacobino, Desmond Snyder, Samantha Jenisky, Akaisha Field, Brandon, Adriana and Artem Eskandsari, two great great grandchildren, Jayden Snyder and Arien Jenisky, several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael.

The funeral will be Friday at 10:00 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Simpson. Family and friends may visit on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc., 621 Main St., Simpson.
