Eugene R. Smugeresky, 80, of Vandling died Saturday at the Forest City Nursing Center. His wife, Janet Werts Cavna, died in 2012.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Stanley & Mary Costolnick Smugeresky, Sr. He was a graduate of Overbrook School for the Blind, Philadelphia. Eugene was a self-employed snack bar operator in Harrisburg.

He was a member of St. Rose Parish, Carbondale and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed listening to “Cold Case” on television and the Philly’s games (or any games) on his trusty radio.  He was always happy to talk baseball with anyone who could keep up with him on team statistics.

The family would like to offer their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Forest City Nursing Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the care of Eugene.

He is survived by four nieces and nephews, Mary Lee Martines and husband Michael, with whom he resided, Vandling, Joan Hoyt and husband Jeffrey, Dover, NJ, Stanley Smugeresky, III, Germantown, MD, Steven Smugeresky and wife Kate, Silver Spring, MD, eight great nieces and nephews, Jillian, Tara, Marlie, Michaela, David, Elizabeth, Emily and Michael, sister in law, Jean Smugeresky Skorupa, Vandling.  He is also survived by his wife’s children, Debbie Murray and husband Fran, Sharon Cavna and Scott Cavna and wife Beth and their children.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Stanley Smugeresky Jr. and infant Joseph.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St., Simpson with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 Am in St. Michael Church, 46 Midland St., Simpson. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Simpson.  Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 Pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Dr., Wilkes-Barre, Pa 18702
