Irene Sumple, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, dedicated nurse and a devoted woman of faith, passed away peacefully at the age of 93.

Irene dedicated her life to caring for others – both in career and at home.

Family was at the heart of Irene’s world. She was preceded in death by her soulmate of 66 years, Basil. She poured love, care, and discipline into her children Donald (Robin) and Barbara (Daniel) and later to her grandchildren Christopher (Samantha), Donald (Katie) and Caitlin (Vivek). No one made her smile more than her great-grand joys, Benjamin and Scotlyn. Sunday dinners, holiday gatherings, youth sports and quiet mornings in Stone Harbor will be cherished memories for all her family.

A devout Orthodox Christian, Irene’s faith guided every aspect of her life. She was a pillar of her church community, offering her time and talents to her church family and attending services regularly (even navigating YouTube in recent years). She was a longtime member of St. Basil’s Church in Simpson and later Holy Apostles Orthodox Church in Mechanicsburg.

Born in Richmondale, daughter of Eva and William Homisak, she was a graduate of Fell High School and the Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing. As a registered nurse, she served with compassion and skill both in private duty and hospital care at Carbondale General Hospital.

Viewing will be held May 21 from 5-7PM with a funeral service on May 22 at 9 AM at Holy Apostles Orthodox Church , 7111 Wertzville Road, Mechanicsburg. Internment ceremony will follow at St. Tikhon’s Cemetery in South Canaan, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene’s memory to Holy Apostles Orthodox Church.
