Joan Marie Hanchak, 85, of Simpson died Monday at the Carbondale Nursing Home. She was the widow of William B. Hanchak, who died in 2003.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Victor & Rose Dumback Malinowski. She was a 1952 graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. Joan had been employed as a seamstress and special education teacher’s aide for the N.E. I. U. # 19, in addition to being a homemaker.

Joan was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson/ St. Rose Parish. She was a vocal soloist and member of the choir for many years.  She was also a member of the former Confraternity of Christian Mothers.

Joan enjoyed gardening, home projects, classical music, and entertaining family and friends. She was a member of the Double M social club with whom she spent many special times.  Her three grandchildren were her greatest joy and she loved spending time with them.  She also enjoyed visiting Arizona and Longwood Gardens with her family.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses, William E. Hanchak and Youron, Phoenix, AZ, Susan Duerr and Todd, Chadds Ford, two grandchildren Brad and Natalie Duerr, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a grandson Eric Duerr, four brothers; Chester, Albin, John and Joseph Malinowski, and five sisters; Renee Thornton, Helen Hawrylo, Eleanor Sarnoski, Lillian Malinowski, and Berty Langol.

The family would like to thank everyone at the Carbondale Nursing Home for the loving care of our mom, especially Noreen.
