John E. Kohan, 86, of Apalachin, NY, died peacefully on July 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy as rich as the tales he told.

Son of the late John and Mabel Kohan, he was born in Carbondale and resided there until joining the Marines upon high school graduation in 1958. John proudly served his country as a Marine and assistant to the chaplain.

He was a masterful storyteller who captivated all with wild accounts of bank robberies and a mysterious cane rumored to conceal a firearm.

IRL John was a salesman for Spaulding and other bakeries. He enjoyed dancing, casino trips, travels to Florida, and home cooked meals reminiscent of childhood favorites. Later in life, John’s cats – especially his sweetheart Trouble- were his world.

He is survived by his siblings Donald (Karen), Ann Marie Kolebuk (Joe), Kathleen McMyne (Joe), Marianne Morgan (Charles), step daughter and caregiver Bonnie Alfatlawi (George, also caregiver), and numerous nieces and nephews who will forever miss his larger than life persona.

Preceding him in death were his wife Alice, daughter JoAnn, grandson Daniel, sister Doris Skasko (Nick), stepson Shawn, and step granddaughter Tara.

John’s family will hold a private celebration of his life. He lived well and laughed often.
