Joseph “ Bandy” Pleska, 89, of Richmondale died Friday morning at home surrounded by his children.  His wife, the former Barbara Hull, died in 1994.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary Ann Ostrowski Pleska.  Joe was a graduate of Fell High School class of 1949, Simpson. He served in the Army during the Korean War where he was awarded the Purple Heart of Combat, Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star.

Joe had been employed as a mason by trade working many years for the Union Labors #130, Scranton.  He was also an active member of the Honor Guard Squad of the Walter Paciga V.F.W. Post #4712, Simpson. He was a member of St. Basil’s Orthodox Church in America, Simpson.

Joe could always be found in the outdoors, he enjoyed his gardening, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.  Joe was a member of the Rupp’s Café Bowling Team that were the ten years champions of the Simpson Businessmen’s League. The family would like to thank Dr. Lee T. Besen and his staff and members of Compassionate Care Hospice for their care and support of Joe and his family.

He is survived by his three children, Debra Pleska, Carbondale, Gina Haley and husband Jack, Greenfield Township, Joseph Pleska and wife Kimberly, Forest City, four grandchildren, Brandon Canfield, Aidan Haley, Isabella and Gabrielle Pleska, a great granddaughter, Aurora Canfield, a brother, Nicholas Plesk, , nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters.

The funeral will be Tuesday with a Requiem Service at 10:00 AM in St. Basil’s Orthodox Church in America, 9 Lord Avenue, Simpson by the Rev. Jason Franchak, Pastor. Entombment will follow with military honors at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield township.

A family visitation will be on Monday from 6-8 Pm at the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc. 621 Main St., Simpson.  Masks are required and Social Distancing rules will be followed.
