Joseph Zavacky, 91, of Simpson died Sunday.   His wife of 67 years is the former Molly Falong.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Michael & Mary Sopko Zavacky. He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson.  Joe served in the Army during WW II.  He was a member of the 7th Army , 42nd “Rainbow” Division which liberated the infamous Nazi concentration camp at Dachau on April 29, 1945.He would speak regularly at colleges and Holocaust events about his experiences and the liberation of the camp.

Joe was employed for 38 years before retirement as a Dining Room Captain at The Windsor and The Brown’s Hotels in the Catskills Mountains of New York.   He was an active member of SS. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson.  He had been a member of the former St. George’s Choral Club and the Holy Name Society of the church. He was also a member of the Grattan Singer Hose Co., Simpson.

Joe was a lifetime member of the Walter Paciga VFW Post # 4712, Simpson and was a post Commander and was a founding member and the captain of the Military Honor Guard. He was also a lifetime member of the AM Vets Chapter #189.

Mornings were Joe’s favorite time of day and he always enjoyed a good cup of coffee and his newspaper. Visiting at the Albert H. Crane Post #221, American Legion, Carbondale and sharing stories was another favorite. He loved his grandsons and treasured the time he spent with them.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Sherry and husband John Farber, Somers Point, NJ, two grandsons, Elliot and Eric and wife Danielle and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Andrew, Michael, Harry and Peter and four sisters, Anna Garbara, Mary Dyshuk, Olga Moskosky and Julia Nasveschuk.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St., Simpson with Divine Liturgy at 10:00 Am in SS. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, 43 Rittenhouse St. Simpson to be celebrated by the Rev. Myron Myronyuk. Interment with military honors will be in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township.

Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SS. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, P.O. Box 124, Carbondale, PA 18407.
