Born in Simpson and a lifelong resident, she was the daughter of the late Anna Cucura and Theorode (Hyria) Harris. Julia was a graduate of Fell Township High School and assisted her husband in the management of his contracting business.

She will be remembered for her pristine table settings and eloquent, delicious dinners, creativity, crafts (esp. sewing, crocheting, knitting and tatting), superb gardening skills and intelligence.  She was a woman of style, elegance and grace.  Julia was a lifelong member of St. Basil Orthodox Church and its Ladies Society.

Surviving are two daughters, Joanne Penick, Greensville, SC, Dorothy and husband Roy Gumpert, Centreville, VA, four grandchildren, Tricia Penick, Kathleen and husband Tim Buckley, Alicia Marie Gumpert-Shiels and Russ Penick, a grandson-in-law, Steve Foster, great-granddaughters, Nichole, Ashley & Rachel Shiels, Sarah Buckley, great-grandsons, Matt & Jack Buckley, a brother Vladimer, nieces and nephews.

Julia’s husband, Michael J. Mikulak constructed and engineered the famous STAR and CROSS that stands on the highest point in Simpson as a gift to the people of Simpson.
