Michael G. Burney, 59, formerly of Carbondale, was called home to God on Monday night, August 1st., surrounded by his loving family.

Born on January 6, 1957, in Duluth, Minnesota, he was the son to Domenica Maida Gillette, of Carbondale, and the late Vincent G. Burney.

Michael was a 1974 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and then served four years with the U.S. Army as an armored tank driver while stationed in West Germany. Mike was a retired Corrections Officer at SCI-Waymart with 30 years of service.

Mike enjoyed chasing the sun and riding his Harley with friends and family. He was a member of the F&AM Aurora Lodge # 523, Jermyn. He was also an active member of the American Legion both home, William J. Griffith, PA Post 465; Jermyn, and while in Arizona.

Mike especially cherished spending time with his granddaughter; she was the joy of his life.

Surviving are his three children, Kayla and husband, Christopher Hoffman, of Clarks Summit; Molly and Michael Burney, of Blakely; granddaughter, Madelyn Hoffman; his friend and mother of his children, Kay Pope, of Blakely; two brothers, Vincent Burney, of Lake Ariel and David Burney, of Clifford, and his loving nieces and nephews. Also his uncle, Jerry Maida, of Carbondale, was his mentor and helped raise him as a child.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of Moses Taylor Hospital, especially MTH ICU, for all the care and compassion given to Mike. They also want to recognize the care provided by the assisted living staff at Clarks Summit Senior Living.

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Wednesday, August 10th at 10:00 AM in the Waymart Church, 342 Honesdale Road, Waymart by Pastor Sal Maiorana.

The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00 am until service time.
