Reverend Peter V. Herhenreader, Carbondale, died on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Carbondale Nursing Home.
Father Herhenreader, son of the late Peter Richard and Blanche M. Golko Herhenreader, was born in South Carbondale on August 30, 1934. He received his early education at Longfellow School in Childs and graduated from St. Rose High School, Carbondale. Father attended King’s College, Wilkes-Barre and the University of Scranton. He received his A.B. from Mount Saint Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, MD on June 2, 1958 and completed his studies for the priesthood at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1959, in Saint Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton, by the Most Reverend Jerome D. Hannan, D.D., late Bishop of Scranton.
Father Herhenreader was assigned as assistant pastor at Saint Juliana, Rock Lake; and Saint Mary’s, Pittston. He was appointed to further studies at Catholic University of America and received a Master of Arts degree in Biology in 1963. While attending graduate school Father served as assistant pastor of Christ the King Parish, Dunmore; Saint Juliana’s, Rock Lake and St Francis of Assisi, Eagles Mere. He then served as assistant pastor at Saint Paul’s, Scranton; St. Mary’s Scranton; Sacred Heart, Luzerne and Saint Lucy’s, Scranton. Father Herhenreader was in residence at Saint Casimir’s, Wilkes-Barre and Ascension Parish, Williamsport. He received his first pastorate at St. Juliana’s, Rock Lake, on September 7, 1976. He was appointed pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, Scranton on September 4, 1979; St. Pius X, Royal on September 5, 1989 and Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mayfield on July 5, 2001 until he retired and was appointed Pastor Emeritus on July 3, 2002.
In addition to his pastoral assignments, Father Herhenreader was appointed Professor of Natural Science at St. Pius X Seminary, Dalton; Director of Religious Formation at Kingston Central Catholic High School; Director of Religious Formation at Bishop Neumann High School, Williamsport and Chaplain of Campus Ministry at Lycoming College. He was moderator of the Diocesan Commission for Ecumenical and Human affairs and served on several ecumenical groups while in various assignments. He was also the moderator of the Knights of Columbus, Mayfield.
He served several terms as the Dean of the Carbondale Deanery and was appointed to the Sacred Heart High School Administrative Council and was a Member of the Board of Pastors of Saint Rose/Sacred Heart High School. Father Herhenreader was chosen “Man of the Year – 1999” by the school community. He also served as the pilgrimage coordinator for the Carbondale Deanery for the Pilgrimages to Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.
Father Herhenreader is survived by a sister, Virginia and husband Richard Yusavitz, Carbondale, a caregiver Marie Kelch, Carbondale, a nephew, two nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Suzanne and a brother, Richard.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Carbondale Nursing Home and Traditional Hospice for their exceptional care of Father Herhenreader over the past few months.
Viewing will take place at Saint Rose of Lima Church, 6 North Church Street, Carbondale, PA, on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A Vigil Mass will be celebrated at Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, on Tuesday evening, May 20, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Viewing will also take place Wednesday morning, an hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass. Interment will be in Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Carbondale. Funeral arrangements by the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc., Simpson.
