Sophie K. Kernoschak, 93 of Carbondale died Thursday at The Gardens at East Mountain, Wilkes Barre. She was the widow of Joseph Kernoschak, who died in 1981. The couple had celebrated 32 wonderful years of marriage at the time of his passing.

Born in Simpson, where she resided most of her life, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Yanchek Rusnak.  Sophie was a 1946 graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. She enjoyed being a homemaker for her family.

She was a member of St. Rose Parish/ St. Michael’s Church, Simpson.  A member of the Mother’s March of Dimes, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4712, Simpson Auxiliary, a member of the former Confraternity of Christian  Mothers.  Sophie was active in Holy Trinity Church picnics and cooking for many other church and community functions.

Sophie was centered around her family and enjoyed cooking, baking and preparing Christmas dinner for them. Her spirit and thoughtfulness will forever be remembered by those who had the pleasure of loving her.

She is survived by her three children,  Jeanne Fortuner and husband Joseph, Simpson, James Kernoschak and  wife Debbie, Landisburg, Susan Miskell and husband Kevin, Archbald,  six grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Shannon, Lauren, Aime and Jennifer, four great grandchildren, Tiffini, Tristen, Trent and Ali, a brother, Bernard Rusnak, Simpson and a sister, Margaret Enright, Carbondale , nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in by a son, baby Joseph Kernoschak, a brother, John Rusnak and a sister, Mary Ann Liuzzo.

The funeral mass will be private for the family to be celebrated by her cousin, the Rev. Phillip Sladicka. Interment will be in Holy Trinity, Simpson.
