Vladimir “Deemer” Sumple, 89, of Simpson died on January 21, 2018 at the Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.  He was the son of the late Samuel and Anna Hawaka Sumple.  He was a graduate of Fell High School.  He was a longstanding member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church where he served the Lord for many years on church council.

Deemer was an athlete and avid sports fan.  Early in life, he was a pitcher for the New York Yankees farm team.  He was an avid bowler in his youth.  Prior to retirement, he worked as an insurance sales agent and he loved meeting and dealing with the public.  After retirement, he enjoyed visits from family, reading newspapers, watching sports and solving crosswords.

He is survived by his brother, Basil, and wife Irene of Mechanicsburg; a niece Barbara Sumple- Sullivan and husband Daniel; a nephew, Donald and wife, Robin; a great niece, Caitlin, and two great nephews, Christopher Sullivan and Donald Sumple.  He also adored the newest family additions, Benjamin and Scotlyn Sullivan, children of Christopher and Samantha Sullivan.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Samuel Sumple, Jr., and sister, Anna Kutch.

Family and friends may visit Saturday from 9 AM until 10:30 AM at the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc., 621 Main St., Simpson. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM at St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, 33 Midland Street, Simpson, by the V. Rev. Archpriest David J. Hritcko. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery.

In recognition of Deemer’s love for children, memorial contributions can be made to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 3401 Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA  19104 or at www.chop.edu/giving
