Obituaries » Walter Babich July 23, 1932 - November 17, 2025 Share your Memorial with Family & Friends Walter Babich, a life long resident of Union Dale died on Monday at the Carbondale Nursing Home. Born in Union Dale, he was the son of the late Harry and Mary Lutchko Babich. He attended school in Pleasant Mount and served in the Army and Army Reserves. Upon returning home, he joined the family working the farm. He was employed at Elk Mountain Ski Center and Triangle Pacific Cabinet Co., Carbondale. He was a member of St. Basil’s Orthodox Church in America. Walter enjoyed playing the accordion, playing Polka’s , fixing and repairing clocks, and watching old westerns and bull riding. He is survived by several nieces and nephews including, Shirley Gamble and husband Rick and David Babich and fiancée Dee Brechtel, who help care for Walter. Walter was preceded in death by ten brothers, Thomas, Nicholas, Theodore, Peter, Samuel, Harry, Basil, John, George, Stephen and three sisters, Esther Keklak, Mary Gunza and Barbara Repella. A funeral Requiem Service will be Friday at 11:30 AM in St. Basil’s Orthodox Church in America, 7 Lord Ave., Simpson with the Rev. Jason Franchak, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in St. Tikhon’s Cemetery, South Canaan. Family and friends my visit on Thursday from 6 to 8 Pm at the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc., 621 Main St. Simpson.
