Our Mom Nellie Manarchuck, 96, of Carbondale, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 14 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loving family for the past two weeks at Geisinger Community Medical Center and a short stay at Wayne Woodlands Manor, when she decided it was time to peacefully leave us. Born in Whites Crossing, daughter of the late Andrew and Rose Lapka, she was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Mom was a woman of great faith and was the prayer warrior of the family. Anytime you needed prayer all you had to do was call Mom. She prayed every morning and every night and if she told you she’d be praying for you, she never missed. Mom ran a tight ship at her house and she was lovingly known as “Mother General.” She loved her family dearly and was blessed with 10 children, having babies in the 1940’s, 50’s, 60’s and one in the 70’s. Her pride and joy was the size of her family. It includes 27 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Well into her 90’s, Mom never missed a birthday or anniversary card or a call to her family members on their special day. Mom loved to can vegetables, loved her flower gardens, watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy every night and loved to play Scrabble and Boggle, her favorite games. When her kids were all grown, she loved to travel by train out west and to Sarasota, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew Manarchuck and daughter Cathy, a son-in-law, Robert Wall, her brothers Joseph Lapka, Louis Lapka, John Lapka and Frank Lapka and sisters Mary Manarchuck, Rose Burns, Helen Knorowski, Anna Rames, Sophie Reifler and Theresa Borowski. She is survived by her sister Betty Gorel, Carbondale, and her 5 sons and 4 daughters; Andrew Manarchuck and wife Chana, Carbondale; Joann Wall, Carbondale; Rev. Joseph Manarchuck, Matamoras; Paul Manarchuck and wife Pat, Eynon; Theresa Shimkus, Scranton; Marie Hollenbeck and husband Tom, Carbondale; Rosalie Giancini and husband Mario, Peckville; John Manarchuck, Carbondale; and Jerry Manarchuck and wife Becky, Burke, VA. A viewing will be held on Friday, July 19 from 5-8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the Joseph W .Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc. 621 Main St., Simpson. Her Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, July 20 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 6 N.
