Obituaries » Elizabeth (Gardas) Hughes August 28, 1924 - June 3, 2021 Share your Memorial with Family & Friends Elizabeth “Betty” Gardas-Hughes, of Waymart went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 3rd. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. She is survived by her son, Glenn, his wife Gift, and grandchildren Sierra and Bryce along with her sister, Mary Gardas-Tragis and companion Jim Mazeika, nieces and nephews. Betty was born on August 28, 1924, in Whites Crossing, Carbondale Township , she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Bednarz Gardas. She witnessed the great Depression, The New Deal and WWII. During WWII, she worked at Otis Elevator grinding crankshafts for military equipment. Betty gave up playing softball at age 65, bowling at age 80. She was a member of the International Women’s Bowling Association with an average of 210. She went to tournaments through-out various states and has a large display of trophies. Betty enjoyed playing cards and board games, as well as going to the casino. She was an avid gardener, growing and canning her own vegetables. She was known for her cooking and was a fastidious cleaner. Betty had a keen sense of fairness. Her favorite pastime was watching birds at the bird feeder. Family was very important and she loved them dearly and was extremely appreciative of all they did for her. She always thanked them with a smile. Special thanks with gratitude to Butch and Ann Marie Donato, Grant, Lori, Graham, Jill, Dudley, as well as her caretaker, Giovanni. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Walter Hughes, A U.S. Marine Purple Heart Recipient –Iwo Jima, and her siblings, Charles, John, Joseph, Stanley, Anthony, Leo and Rose, along with nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Sunday with a Blessing Service at 1:00 PM, in the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc., 621 Main St., Simpson by Deacon Edward Kelly, of St. Mary’s Church, Waymart. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Interment will be in Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart.
